Sarah Backs Call for Energy Price Freeze

Constituents often contact me to highlight the difficulties of rising energy prices. Since this government took office, prices have risen faster than wages in 38 out of 39 months and energy bills have gone up by almost £300. I am well aware that many people, not just in Rotherham, but across the country, have to work hard and harder, just to make ends meet. As winter approaches, energy prices are going up yet again. Many people are now afraid they may not be able to afford to keep the heating on. The latest figures do not appear to support the energy companies assertion that wholesale costs are rising, so why are bills going up yet again this winter?

Frankly I don't think this is right. The cost of energy, and the behaviour of the energy companies, is increasingly becoming a national scandal.

The problem is that the government won't deal with the cost of living crisis because they stand up for a privileged few, not for ordinary families. I am delighted to support Ed Miliband's call for a price freeze price until the start of 2017, as well as a restructuring of the energy market to make it more competitive and transparent.

But people in Rotherham need help now, so I'm asking local people to support an immediate price freeze by signing this petition today. Let's make sure that the voices of Rotherham are heard loud and clear in Downing Street!
