Sarah Champion MP calls for a cruelty-free future on the World Day for Laboratory Animals (24th April)
Sarah Champion, Member of Parliament for Rotherham, urges the Government to prioritise non-animal testing methods, on World Day for Laboratory Animals (24th April).
For years, Sarah has passionately campaigned on issues relating to animal welfare. As part of World Day for Laboratory Animals, she is calling on the Government to end unnecessary animal cruelty, by championing research and development that uses animal-free alternatives.
92% of drugs that show promise in animal tests currently fail to reach clinical standards as there are major differences between species. Sarah is arguing that human-specific technologies, like 3D bioprinters and ‘organ-on-a-chip’ technology, offer the best possible chance of securing medical progress as they produce more reliable results.
She has been working with ministers to make the economic case for supporting non-animal research methods, demanding that the Government backs this emerging sector, and leads the world towards a cruelty-free future.
Commenting, Sarah said:
This issue resonates deeply with people across the UK. Animal protection is not just an aspiration but a shared value across society – made clear by the many Rotherham constituents that write to me about it.
Championing non-animal methods would save millions of animals from harm, while taking nothing away from the humans they are designed to help.
As brands are proactively seeking out cruelty-free methods to test and launch products, the Government should be leveraging this opportunity to become a world-leader in cruelty-free research and development
