Sarah Champion MP sends cross-party letter to the Prime Minister, calling for child abuse to be treated as a national priority.
Sarah Champion, MP for Rotherham, has been campaigning on child protection for over a decade. Today she sent a cross-party letter to the Prime Minister, signed by 25 MPs and Peers, calling on the UK Government to treat endemic child abuse as a national priority. Signatories include Ruth Cadbury MP, Robbie Moore MP, Monica Harding MP and others.
Signatories called on the Government to urgently implement all 20 recommendations outlined in the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse, with ring-fenced funding for each recommendation. They asked for guarantees that victims and survivors would be at the heart of their delivery.
The letter said: “In past weeks, many of the undersigned have heard constituents’ harrowing survivor testimonies, stories of injustice, and concerns about possible cover-ups. Constituents rightly want assurances that we are doing all we can to uncover the truth and campaign for change, regardless of our party.”
Commenting, Sarah Champion MP, said: “I welcome the work the Government is already doing to implement the IICSA recommendations, but we must keep the pressure on to make sure all 20 recommendations are embedded across departments. I want us to be able to say with confidence that the UK has robust policies in place to identify and prevent abuse, support victims and survivors and secure justice. I’m proud that parliamentarians, regardless of political party, have come together to achieve this aim. We can only properly protect children by working together.”
This follows Sarah’s event on 4th February in Parliament, where she held a pledging meeting to end child sexual abuse in the UK. This was supported by almost 100 cross-party MPs and Peers [1].
