Sarah Champion Speaks Up For Small Businesses
The coronavirus pandemic will have a profound and long-lasting impact upon Britain’s economy. As we enter the sixth week of lockdown, many small businesses in Rotherham and across the country are facing an uncertain future.
Small businesses are the backbone of Britain’s economy. Yet they are also the amongst the most vulnerable to the financial disruption we currently face. It is vital, therefore, that the needs of small businesses are at the forefront of the government’s economic response to coronavirus.
I have been concerned to hear from many small businesses in Rotherham that existing support packages are simply not fit for purpose. In particular, constituents have highlighted the Small Business Grant Fund. This fund provides £10,000 grants to small businesses to help them to weather the current crisis. Eligibility is tied to the business rates system. But many small businesses are not registered for business rates, either because they do not operate from a brick and mortar property, or because they rent space in a larger premise and pay rates via their landlord.
By basing eligibility upon the business rates system, the government has failed to take into account the reality of how many small businesses operate. As a consequence, they find themselves cut off from this crucial support.
Supported by fifty MPs from across the House of Commons, I have written to the Chancellor to urge him to ensure that all small businesses are able to access this vital lifeline.
I will continue to do whatever I can to support Rotherham businesses and to defend our local economy.
