Tuesday, February 2nd, 2016 @ 10:48AM
Sarah Champion MP, Shadow Minister for Preventing Abuse and Domestic Violence, has responded to the news that changes in the electoral registration system mean around 3.7 per cent of people in Rotherham have fallen off the electoral register.
Labour Party research found that nationally, an estimated 800,000 people are no longer on the register.
ÔÇ£The Tories have rushed through changes to the electoral registration system, and now around 2,381 people in Rotherham have fallen off the register and may not even realise it.
ÔÇ£There are major local elections here in Rotherham next year. And soon we have a big choice to make about whether Britain stays in the EU. But if people arenÔÇÖt on the electoral register, they will not be able to vote and have their say. They could even face an ┬ú80 fine and find it harder to get a credit card or a mobile phone contract.
ÔÇ£This week is National Voter Registration Drive ÔÇô the perfect opportunity for people in Rotherham to register to vote. ItÔÇÖs quick and easy – you can register in just three minutes by going to gov.uk/register-to-vote.ÔÇØ
